Many of you may have seen the show “My Super Sweet Sixteen” on MTV. For those of you who haven’t, the basis of the reality TV show was to follow entitled teenagers as they plan and throw a lavish sixteenth birthday party for themselves. On the show, many of the kids come across as spoiled, demanding, and rude.
Well, MTV launched a new TV series so that you can once again follow the lives of these kids, and maybe watch them get a reality check while you’re at it. On “Exiled,” MTV plucks a few of the teenagers featured on the "My Super Sweet Sixteen" series out of their cushy environments and sends them to third world countries, hoping that they will also learn some life lessons along the way.
However, the show has been criticized for propagating stereotypes of the countries that the kids are sent to. Another criticism of the show is that the focus is on the teenagers and not the culture of the countries or the host families that take them in.
What do you think about this new TV show and other reality shows like them? Do you think that they offer any positive benefits to their viewers? Do you think that this show has the potential to make viewers more aware of the countries shown? And do you think it matters how the country and culture are presented on the show?
