Recently, it came out in the American news that many people are upset about the New Yorker Magazine cover which charicatures the Democratic Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle Obama. The New Yorker says this cover parodies and therefore reveals as ridiculous the stereotyping and bias the couple faces. Yet other people feel that by publishing this image without a caption or accompanying article, the farce is lost on many and instead, the magazine is perpetuating sexist, racist, and other biased views against the couple.



So today, our Friday Story Idea is: Parody!



To explore this theme, here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing:

1. How can you tell when something is a real parody?

2. When creating a parody, how do you make sure your audience gets the message?

2. What do you do when some people think something's funny and you think it's offensive?

3. When is making light of something ok, and when is laughter mean or cruel?

4. Make your own parody of a TV show, MTV video, play, radio show, etc.!
