Friday...er, Saturday Story Ideas: Dance.

I'd hoped to post a story idea yesterday, but instead I found myself at the band banquet, when over a hundred kids from my school's band descended on a local venue for a buffet dinner, awards, and several hours of dancing. I'd been looking forward to the awards, especially the "band nostalgia" part, where the entire band votes on two people from each grade in categories from "nicest brass" and "most likely to scare freshmen" to "jazziest" and "most musical." But it seemed like most of the people in the room couldn't wait to finish the awards so they could get onto the dance floor, the part I was dreading most. See, I hate dancing. The last thing I wanted to do was awkwardly move around, not enjoying myself and having others realize how clueless I am when it comes to dancing. Every time I go to a dance, people tell me that if I'd just stop caring, I'd have fun, but I never believe them unless one of my friends drags me out onto the dance floor, and then I realize I really can enjoy dancing, ridiculously uncoordinated as I may be.

The reason I picked the topic "dance" is that there's so much you can write about.
There are school dances, which most middle and high schoolers seem to either love or hate. Have you ever been to a dance? What did you think of it? How was the music? ...the dancing?
But that's far from the limit of the word "dance." Do you take dancing lessons or dance in a troupe? What kind of dancing do you do? Talk about an experience you had...something you learned, or just a fun time.
And then there's the history involved. People dance everywhere, and I think that dancing is a part of nearly every culture in some capacity. You could research an interesting type of dance. There's the well-known Spanish flamenco, the Latin merengue, belly dancing, tango, May Pole dance, or if you're feeling adventurous, something like Csárdás or Bharatanatyam...the list goes on and on, and there's definitely some interesting history to dive into.

We want to hear what you have to say! Comment as much as you like, and send all kinds of work, from articles and poetry to artwork and videos and whatever else you can think of to gweb@newmoongirlmedia.com. :D
