Resources for Suicide Prevention

In our discussion of bullying and language, an orb28 member asked after resources and advice for suicide prevention.

It takes courage to speak up, but you could save someone's life, so don't hesitate to speak with adults and caring professionals.

Resources and things you can do:

1. If the situation is an emergency, call 911 (or your country's emergency number - in the UK, for example, it's 999) and ask for help. Tell them you (or your friend) are in suicidal danger.

2. You can check the front of your phone book for suicide prevention hotlines and psychological services for those considering suicide and friends of those considering suicide.

Some key words you can look for are:
-suicide prevention
-crisis intervention
-hotlines - crisis or suicide
-community crisis center
-county mental health center
-hospital mental health clinic

3. Call a hotline.

2nd floor is a good one answered by trained folks with clinical supervisors on hand at all times. They are open until midnight Eastern Time (although they hope to go 24 hr soon)
http://www.2ndfloor.org/

Women's Referral Central - 24 hr.
1-800-322-8092

Youth Crisis Hotline 1-800-448-4663

4. Check out these websites for helpful information:

Suicide Foundation for Suicide Prevention

National Strategy for Suicide Prevention

Suicide Prevention resource Center

Thanks so much for asking these tough questions! I had a friend who began to tell me she might commit suicide, and I wasn't sure what to do because I knew she'd be furious if I told an adult (and I was afraid she would "get in trouble"). I decided that was the right thing to do anyway even though I was scared to do it!, and of course she didn't "get in trouble" but was given the help that she needed. She later she thanked me for it. :)

Please feel free to share your honest thoughts and questions here on the orb28 blog - that's what we're here for! When girls come together and help each other out, beautiful things can happen.

Friday Story Ideas: Food!

Maybe it's just that it's lunchtime, but I'm thinking an important topic we haven't hit yet is food.

What is the history of your favorite food?
What healthy food tips do you have?
How do females relate to food? Is this relationship good for us girls?
What do you think about the obsession with dieting?
And whatever else you can think of!

Send videos, artwork, written pieces, and more to gweb@newmoongirlmedia.com to submit to the blog. We can't wait to have you share! (And of course, feel free to comment away :)

Girl-created content: Poem!

Check out this poem from an orb28 member!

When the wind feels so cold
it could freeze your fingers

when the world feels like
it's falling apart inside you

when the knowledge of all the
genocide and massacres builds up

turn to someone you love
and ask them for a hug

because maybe just the ability
to cry into their arms

can save you from misery

What do you think this poem's about? What about it can you relate to? What does it make you think of?

orb28 Thoughts on Censorship

An orb28 reader brought up the really interesting topic of censorship the other day, so I'd like to repost it!

"This is a bit off topic, but it's been on my mind lately. I was thinking about censorship and how people will try to ban books. I think one thing that bothers me most about that is that the challengers of the books will take a phrase or something out of context, for instance, someone challenged a Mark Twain book because it used an awful word for someone who's black. But that was an authentic portrayal of the setting! I've also heard that the Harry Potter books have been challenged for promoting witchcraft, which I think is pretty ridiculous. And some books written for kids to learn about puberty and their bodies are challenged, too. I wish this didn't happen! Adults try to shield kids and even teens from reality, but as you get older, you can gradually be told more details about subjects that are "inappropriate" in some adults' eyes. Once I was looking at the teen section in a bookstore and someone who worked there came up to me and informed me that I couldn't look at that section without a parent! I wasn't 6 or 7, I was 11 years old; I think that's old enough to responsibly browse the teen section!!!!"

Are there times when censorship is ok? What does freedom of speech mean to you? Feel free to comment without censoring yourself :)
